The things from the Sonia Rykiel line that I really like are so few and far between that when I see one of them, I get a bit excited. This clean white outfit is something that any little girl would love because of the pink sequin butterflies. They give the whole thing that borderline dress-up magical feel. I can just picture a stylish little mama swirling around in the tiered skirt. The thing that always knocks me over about Sonia Rykiel is the price. This set was originally a nominally large $434.00. Sonia Rykiel Baby Rainbow Knickers

If Sonia Rykiel and I were in a Facebook relationship, it would say "it's complicated." I go back and forth with her designs: I love the signature black and rainbow stripes that show up in much of her clothing (although it's more the kids line rather than the baby things). But mostly everything outside of the stripes (fur coats, velour onesies) I do not care for at all. These little knickers are rainbow, therefore they fall into the "likeable" category for me. I pick on Sonia Rykiel a lot, so when I saw this baby bag I knew I had to talk about it, because I like it. It reminds me of the 80's. I think I used to own a pair of pants with these exact same colors and stripes. And yes, they were as pretty as they sounds. This is just a neat bag. It's velour, it's colorful, it's different, and it holds a gigantor amount of stuff. One point for Sonia. For $282.00, this bag is available at childrensalon.com.

You know... there are some things I can accept as far as the designer world goes. In many cases, you get what you pay for when you drop a huge amount of money on a unique "designer" item. A lot of times you are just paying for the name. I am not trying to pick on Sonia Rykiel here, especially after I posted this about one of her very obnoxious unique fur jackets, but this onesie costs $310.00. The snaps are not sterling silver, the rhinestones are not Swarovski crystals, the velour is not blessed by some high priest who only blesses things once a year... it's a onesie. I would even go as far as to say that it's ugly. Maybe I am just cranky because I don't feel well, and because I am out of coffee. Sorry Sonia, this is not my favorite. Sometimes it seems to me like you slap the word "designer" on something and it magically turns disgusting into delicious, so to speak. Take this Sonia Rykiel fur jacket featured on lavishkids.com. If you were cruising the aisles of Wal-Mart and ran across this, let me guess... you would gag. It looks like a toilet seat cover. Your baby would like like she was trying to fly because of her inability to lower her arms due to the fluffiness of this monstrosity. But this is not from Wal-Mart, it was designed by long-time French designer Sonia Rykiel. Now people are apt to think "Ooooo this is so avant-garde and luxurious." I guess that is how the fashion world works, and I have been guilty of this phenomenon many a times. In any case, this jacket does not have a Wal-Mart price tag; it can be yours for $399.00.
